May 2008 - Celebrate With Wine & Roses
Now that spring weather has finally arrived and our yards and landscapes have come out of their winter slumber, it is a great time to add more color. Why not celebrate with "Wine & Roses" or how about some "Summer Wine"?
Wine & Roses Weigela is a Proven Winner shrub, with intoxicating, dark burgundy-purple leaves that shimmer like a fine wine! Hot pink-rose colored flowers display beautifully against the dark glossy foliage. Leaf color intensifies to near black in late summer and does not fade to green like some older selections. The tubular flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds! Add great season-long color in any sunny spot in the landscape, Wine & Roses Weigela grows to about 3 to 4 feet tall and is winter hardy in our tri-state area.
Summer Wine is a cool new smaller version of purple-leaf Ninebark. This shrub has attractive wine colored, deeply cut fine leaves with pinkish-white, button-like flowers in mid-summer. Beautiful orange autumn leafs and papery peeling tan bark provides winter interest. This is truly a four-season plant. Use it next to yellow and bright green plants, or against a light background for the best effect.
Not sure what to get Mom for Mother's Day? She will sure love the beautiful blooms of both of these great multi seasonal interest shrubs. They are both fast growing and trouble free. Enjoy as either an accent plant or used for a dramatic mass planting. The rich colored foliage makes their branches an excellent addition to cut flower bouquets.
